ABODE
Materials and Shapes inspired by the ancient dwellings of our ancestors.
The Abode series of abstract paintings was first created at the beginning of 2020. Little did I know that the theme of “home” would become the focal point of daily existence. This body of work, explores the architecture of ancient homes, shelters and structures made from natural materials local to their environment such as clay, soil, mud, reed, sand, bamboo, thatched roofs, straw, and grass. The forms and shapes of each piece, draw inspiration from the hand building techniques of cob, Adobe, huts, earth homes and cliff dwellings. While the use of raffia is a reference to straw, seagrass, and dried palms used in many cultures architecture, it is also an ode to the palms and environment in which I grew up here in Miami. Therefore, forming a connection from the place of inspiration back to my home.
